Ico/Shadow of the Colossus conlang? [Jul. 20th, 2008|11:20 am]

linguaphiles

[tekiclutch]
[mood | curious]

I've recently gotten back into Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, both brilliant games which utilize a conlang. Wiki says the games use a combination of Japanese and Latin backwards, but there's no citation of it, so I'm honestly kind of skeptical.

Now, I can pick out the odd morpheme in common with Japanese (shi for 'death' and ken for 'sword' and so on) but I can't pick out any backwards Latin at all. It could be possible that I can't pick it out among all the Japanese phonological stuff going on, though. It also kind of sounds like in the direction they gave the voice actors a tonal quality like they were emulating Chinese somewhat. I even heard a line like "wo mei" translated in the English subtitles as 'my life'. Wo3 being Chinese for "I" and mei from the Japanese morpheme for "life" (inochi).

Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I don't know how many conlang people are on this community, but I was just wondering if anybody else had looked into this.

Thought I'd share this. It's a very different, early version of The Holy Hour, live at Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam on 17/10/1980.
It has a strong Gormenghast influence, like The Drowning Man. [although I don't think there's quite as many lines copied straight from the book as in TDM. I didn't recognise any, anyway.]

The Holy Hour

When I get around to uploading them, I've got eleven full concerts from 1979 and 1980. I can upload them as flac or mp3, whatever is wanted. Most of them are really good quality, better than most of the ones I have from the last few years, actually.

What I want to know is, what the hell is a MiG? I'm a Top Gun beginner, this is the first time I'e ever seen it.. And boy, do I understand the attraction now.

(I really do not like Cruise now ... but when he was young, he was hot.)

Also, what the hell is a "fly by"? I mean, I know was it is, but I don't get the significance of it?

(Also, Kilmer has ... I don't know, done the same thing as David Boreanaz for me, lost that youthful - well, I guess that's the problem right there since they've aged, ha! - slim/athletic body shape. But gosh he was hot in this film too.)

I think I want to own this on dvd.

Collab of the Week: Shapes! [Jul. 20th, 2008|12:04 am]

linguaphiles

[kaji_sensei]
Welcome to this week's collaboration project on LingWiki! This week's theme is shapes!

Looking primarily for the basic two-dimensional shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, etc.). Any other two- or three-dimensional shapes are welcome, so feel free to add in some of your favorites.

If you're feeling ambitious and don't mind letting your work be used on the site, recordings of pronunciations would be great as well! A great way to do that and help many other people as well is to register at Forvo and record the word there.

Thanks to all who contribute! The assembled collection of the contributions will be viewable at shapes.

It's raining and pouring and if we lose one more degree in Woden Valley it may well be snowing. The mountains have snow, at least. We have severe weather conditions forecasted, which means sharp and strong winds here and blizzards in the higher lands. I bet we get lots of drivers waving at Parliament House on the way through to the skifields next weekend.

When it's wet, one plans food. When it's wet and one is not well yet, one plans food that has mainly been pre-prepared (preferably by someone else). When it's wet and one is not well yet and one has been to the markets, one plans beef burgundy pie and tiny, new season, fresh artichoke hearts with a gourmet vinaigrette dipping sauce and, on the side, heirloom tomatoes.

What's especially nice is to realise that this sudden interest in finding out how the guy at the market makes his pies means that I'm finally (possibly? finally in a 'don't tempt Fate' mode?) on the mend.

PS I spent $75 today. That got me 2 big bags of vegies and 2 small ones, a dozen rather wonderful straight-from-the-farm eggs, and a gourmet meat pie so substantial it will do 6 meals. There was no padding with cheaper vegetables, either, because I don't need potatoes and pumpkin this week. There was no fruit, because a 10 kg bag of oranges takes some working through, even though I gave away about half of it. The longer my friends and I shop at the Farmers' Markets the more I realised just how overpriced normal retail fruit and vegies are in the ACT. Also how old said retail product is. Things like artichoke hearts become a joy rather than a private tragedy.

PPS My carrots are heritage and are in four different colours. The white ones are for frying in just a little olive oil, later on, because they have a higher sugar content and fry delightfully. I might make a purple carrot salad tomorrow, with its own leaf as the green. That should help get me better!

PPPS What's funny is that I'm not hungry and haven't been all day. It's all to do with eyes and brain and enough energy to get enthusiastic about something. All week I've been mired in negativities because things just hurt too much. Now the pain is finally at a moderate level, I can dream of delectables.

PPPPS You need to know that I'm still uninteresting. It's the contents of my fridge that you ought to want to be your next best friend. I refuse to friend those contents, myself, because I'm not in the habit of eating friends.

Handshake Event Shibuya [Jul. 19th, 2008|03:02 pm]

kiyo_blog

[kikuko_kamimura]
This is kiyo, who chased the Triangle with both hands outstretched all the way home.

Moving on from lighter topics, I'd like to offer my gratitude for yesterday.

Thank you so much for making yesterday's
“ARTISAN OF PLEASURE” Release Event & Handshake Session a success!
Though I was strangely nervous, considering it had been since the publication of my book since I did an event like this...
But, it was so much fun!!
Moreover, I was so happy to see that so many people came.

I'm deeply moved by seeing people who know about the event talking about it in the comments and on their blogs; it's like “Aaaah!”

Though...it might have been hard for the people in the back and standing along the sides to hear what I was saying.
I'm sorry about that...

Some of you were kind enough as to bring me presents; I'm working my way through them one by one.
Thank you for doing that just for me.

Thanks to that
I ended up being able to take home three bags with just sweets inside.

I could live for half a year on all of this.

Thanks to those of you who were unable to make it, too, due to work or other things. I'm happy to know that you waited around as long as you could.

I'll be going on to Osaka and Nagoya, but those of you who are coming, feel free to not wear bras...I mean, please come with a light heart and empty-handed.

I'm looking forward to being able to meet all of you!

Ah, also,
Until all of my events are over with, please refrain from writing about them in your blogs or in other reports.
Sorry for just deciding this on you, but let's all be team players, okay?

Obviously, recording audio and taking pictures at the events is prohibited.

By the way,
Yesterday morning, suddenly, I just had to eat this...

KKD

I ended up buying it on the train...

What could this be, a cat's energy...

I brought it home with me, and warmed it up in the oven for exactly 8 seconds.
Since it was morning, I bought it without even standing in line first.

Here, I'll keep going with my “Gosadou: The Complete Edition” CD commentary.

#3 “Kyuuden no Bansan”

This is the ending I hummed for “Gosadou: Test Launch” in its full, orchestrated version.
Actually, it was completed around the same time “Test Launch” was released.
Or, rather, as expected, it was completed about a year ago.

I heard people say, “I thought for sure you'd put on the humming version”, but that would be impossible!
Or, should I say, you can hear it just fine on “Gosadou: Test Launch”.
That's enough.

With this song, too, I did the part from 0:45 to 1:14, and then changed keys to divide the two sections.
The zanzanzanzan part that begins at 0:46 was really hard...
As I've said before, doing something with an identical tempo, length and emphasis makes it sound mechanical, so I did a lot of fine-tuning there.

Compared to that, the following zan zan section went relatively easily, but I was always changing the length of the notes.

The trumpet phrase you can hear from about 1:17 is in the same motif as the phrase beginning at 1:44 of “reprise of tears” from “ARTISAN OF PLEASURE”.

Since I originally composed this piece as a band piece, I made that part of the phrase with synth (with the strings synth).
Is it a little complicated?

For the melody phrase, I used synthesized trombone. I can't really say anything about it if I listen to it really really loud. I listen to it thinking that I did well.

With this ends the commentary on all the credited pieces, though I'd like to try offering more on the songs that can only be heard on the DVD itself.

After all
I was serious in creating those too.

So~
Tomorrow is Osaka, and the day after tomorrow is Nagoya!!
I'm looking forward to it!!
(You have to already have numbered tickets for these...just to make sure you know.)

Since I'll answer any questions you have for me, please be sure to ask!

Eh...but if it's too inconvenient for me, I'll just wave them away, though...hee hee.

See you later.

hen's night. [Jul. 20th, 2008|02:05 am]

[music |the tv]

righto then, let's see if i can make sense at 2.05 in the morning.

so tonight was my hen's night and candice, pam and claudia took me on a cruise, which i liked very much (and not just because of the male strippers. heh). so it was a very interesting sort of date with the girls, which actually started out all wrong. my shoes fell apart, bag strap snapped off and when i got to the city i realised i didn't have any ID on me because i had left my wallet at home. so of course i felt like the biggest idiot on the planet. i always used to think i had half a brain. now i am beginning to think i haven't even got that.  anyway, it was all good. i've got some photos to upload. some very er unusual photos. teehee.

hmm for some lunatic reason i feel really sorry for those male strippers. really sorry. i don't know why. the harbour is so beautiful at night. and now i am rambling on, it's time to trudge upstairs to bed i think. the kitty wants some whiskers. argh so lazy.

and i'm so thankful i have such lovely friends. i'm sure i don't deserve them. i should try to be a better person. bloody me almost ruined the entire night by leaving my ID at home.

mmmm seeing (well feeling really) all those naked men is making me miss N so bloody much.

German help: Oktoberfest [Jul. 19th, 2008|08:24 pm]

[micholover]
[mood | confused]

I have oral presentation next week and I choose to talk about Oktoberfest, there’s some word I don’t know how to pronounce and don’t know exactly it means. Can anybody help me please?

1.How to pronounce ‘Theresienwiese’? And in this sentence ‘…Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (namesake of the Theresienwiese festival grounds)’ Is it mean that the festival ground named after her name or something like that? I’m sorry, apart from German, my English is bad too. :(

2.How to pronounce ‘d’Wiesn’? And what does it mean? I found it from this sentence ‘The festival is held on an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called d’ Wiesn for short.’

3.How to pronounce ‘käsespätzle’? In this sentence ‘…käsespätzle (cheese noodles)’. I wonder how it looks like and how to cook it.

4.How to pronounce ‘Äpfelpfannenkuchen’?

5.How to pronounce ‘Therese’? In this sentence ‘…Princess Therese’.

6.How to pronounce and where is it in Germany, ‘Saxe-Hildburghausen’?

7.How to pronounce and is there a word in English of ‘Sennerhut’?

Vielen dank!

Rules: When you see this meme immediately perform a screen capture of your desktop. It is best that no icons be deleted before the screen capture so as to add to the element of fun.

1. Go to your desktop and press the Print Scrn key (located on the right side of the F12 key).
2. Open a graphics program (like Picture Manager, Paint, or Photoshop) and doing a Paste (CTRL + V).
3. Post the picture on your blog. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop if you want. You can explain why you prefer such a look or why it is full of icons. Things like that.

It features stills from the movie Imagine Me & You, which is such a sweet movie and I adore it.

I went out for lunch with my family today to celebrate my sister completing her undergraduate degree. Got attacked by rather painful period cramps ten minutes after arriving there, which was less than fun, but after I got the pain to settle it was quite nice sitting by the window, in the sunshine.

And that's about all I have to write about. Spent the rest of the day in bed.

I may not be interesting today, but Conflux certainly is. Does anyone remember "Let the Blood Run Free," which has to have been the strangest soapie every produced in Australia? One of the writers is coming to Conflux (obviously our media guest, since most other niches are covered). He's done a whole lot of way reputable stuff since then, including "The Tomorrow Girl." He's going to be awesome! He and Jack Dann as a tandem act are going to be even more so (my brain implodes when I try to find the right description and I don't feel implosive tonight, so you can find your own words).

Felicity Pulman is also giving a workshop. She has a wonderful gift for teaching teens about writing and how to create. She also writes the Janna Mysteries and I intend to collar her and get Jannatime. Flick also got back from the Galapagos recently. She's going to be a Darwinist-magnet.

I can see I must beef up the chocolate. Maybe not 'beef up' - maybe just make sure there is lots and it's good. Fortunately, I'm in Melbourne for Jewish things just before Conflux and the place I got that gum-filled rocket and all those chocolate ghosts from is half way between my mother's and my sister's place. I can't compete with the brilliance of the other guests, but I can certainly provide more chocolate. Also, I can bring grains of paradise. I don't know what I'll do with them if there isn't a food panel, but I'll bring them.

It's all on the Conflux website, which is way more interesting than me tonight. That's because everything will be way more interesting than me until the weather finishes changing. I blame my Perth friends for not hanging onto their weather. Canberra should not be getting Perth weather in winter. (So there.)

Have you ever had days where you know you're uninteresting?

My cure for these is a hot bath and a good book. The good book is by Marjorie Liu (sent to me by the very kind Lyn Viehl, through her blog) and the hot bath is very fragrant. It may not make me more interesting, but it should certainly relax me.

I'm going to blame the weather. When I become a fascinating human being again, I shall tell you about fascinating things. Till then, I recommend fragrant baths and good books.

How do you say "random" in Spanish? Some online dictionary says escogido al azar, but I'm talking about "random" in the sense of something coming from out of the blue, unexpectedly - like a random thought that occurs to you. Aleatorio doesn't seem right, but maybe it is.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!
